Frederick County
Forest Conservancy District Board
July 12, 2010 Meeting Minutes
Those present: Keith Schoonover, George Lewis, Lynne Marquess, Tyson Rose, Tom Anderson, Mike Kay
Call to order: Keith called the meeting to order and June’s Minutes were approved as written.
Treasurer’s Report: Tom mentioned that we were successful in obtaining MUCFC Grants for Waterford Park $900 and the Frederick County Arboretum $1050 this month. In addition we accrued $2.50 interest in our account. The balance for the Treasury now stands at $$10,979.07. Mike handed Tom a check for $900 which represented Frederick County’s contribution to the Board for 2010.
Logging site exams: Mike and Lynne did a number of inspections last month and had to delay approval on one plan because the plan did not match the marking on site. After conferring with the landowner and consultant forester a revised plan was submitted that jibed with the marking. We approved this revised plan. No new plans were submitted for July.
Neighborhood Green: We began conducting our site visits and Mike was able to meet with three landowners. Mike reviewed their plans and is helping them submit a grant proposal for plantings to be conducted in 2011. We have a cadre of 5 Service Providers in our committee and in total we plan to meet with 16 landowners who attended the training program in May. So far the NWFW Grant proposal has not be approved or denied but we should know about the status of this application by the end of July. We plan on conduct another training either in November 2010 or May 2011.
Interpretive Signs: Mike spoke with one of the Seasonal Rangers at Gambrill who showed interest in developing the Tree ID Trail. Perhaps this can reinvigorate this program.
NRCC: Lynne reports that 29 students are signed up for this year. Frederick County is sending 5 students with one last minute cancellation. Frederick County is sponsoring 2 students, Allegany is sponsoring 2, and Carroll County is sponsoring 1 student. Upon successful completion of the camp, if a student submits a report on their time at camp, the Frederick Board will reimburse the student the $100 service fee. Lynne distributed a second draft of the Tree Fund report she will be submitting for the $5,000 grant she was able to obtain for NRCC last year. The Frederick Board wishes to thank the Allegany and Carroll County boards for their generous contributions!
Nature Notes: Mike relayed how he saw and was able to photograph a Luna Moth last week at Gambrill and when he got in his truck a radio commercial came on Luna Furniture Company. (Mike took this as a sign that he had to do a Nature Notes article on Luna moths.) Tyson commented that this was lunacy!
Web Site: Tyson had some suggestions on updating the site that Board members agreed with.
Other business: Tom was glad to announce that as of July 11, 2010 he is now a certified Grandfather after Kenleigh Lyn Anderson was borne into this world. Tom indicated that he wouldn’t mind being called Pappy or Gramps now but he still feels like a teenager. (What no cigars?)
